IME Reporting Services

VERIFY provides a range of medico-legal reporting services for plaintiff and defendant lawyers, insurers, and self-insurers, ensuring a balanced and unbiased approach to support legal proceedings. Our services are tailored to meet the specific needs and requirements of each party, promoting a fair and just legal process.

Independent Medical Examination (IME)

An independent medico-legal examination (IME) is designed to provide an impartial, expert medical opinion about the claimant/examinee’s injuries or medical conditions. The expert will evaluate whether the injury is stable and stationary, permanent, and determine how the injury affects the claimant/examinee’s capacity to work and function.

Videolink Assessment

Videolink assessments are available in circumstances where the claimant/examinee is unable to attend the specialist’s office in person, allowing the IME to be conducted remotely. To participate in a videolink assessments, the claimant/examinee must have access to the following:

  • Appropriate Device: A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone.
  • Strong Internet Connection: A reliable internet connection is essential to ensure clear communication.
  • Quiet Environment: They must be located in a private and quiet space for the duration of their assessment.

In some cases, videolink assessments can be conducted from correctional facilities.

Surrogate Assessment

Surrogate assessments are facilitated by VERIFY in instances where claimants are unable to attend an in-person assessment with a VERIFY specialist, yet a physical examination is necessary due to the nature of their injury.

In such circumstances, a ‘surrogate’ will be engaged, typically a physiotherapist or allied health professional, to perform the physical examination under the real-time direction of our specialist, via video link. This approach maintains clinical accuracy while significantly reducing inconvenience for both our clients and claimants/examinees.

Additionally, surrogate assessments are an effective way to ensure claimants living regionally or who cannot travel still have access to IMEs.

*Surrogate assessments are only available for IMEs with Orthopaedic Surgeons and Occupational Therapists.

Home Visit Assessment

VERIFY’s Occupational Therapist (OT) offers home visit IMEs, where appropriate. Assessing the claimant/examinee in their own home facilitates a comprehensive evaluation regarding the claimant/examinee’s current condition, abilities, supports, challenges, and goals.

Additionally, it allows for detailed assessment and analysis of their home environment in situ, and may therefore result in more comprehensive recommendations as to the necessity of  further home modifications, equipment, care, or other aids.

*Home Visit Assessments are only available for IMEs with Occupational Therapists.

Other Reporting Services

File Review

The specialist reviews the received medical files and forms an opinion without seeing the claimant/examinee.

After conducting the File Review and forming their opinion, the medico-legal specialist then provides their opinion to the client, either in the form of a verbal opinion, written report, or both.

Supplementary Report

A Supplementary Report is an additional report that serves as a ‘follow up’ to an existing medico-legal report, usually after additional documents have been received.

The specialist will review the additional documents, and may require an additional assessment of the claimant, prior to production of the supplementary report.

Teleconference

An over-the-phone discussion between the specialist and the lawyers regarding a specific matter.

Clients may book a teleconference with a VERIFY specialist for a diverse array of reasons, including to obtain a preliminary opinion, to clarify a point of complexity in the wake of receiving a report, or to seek insight from the specialist more generally.

Joint Medical Examination

A Joint Independent Medical Examination (JIME) occurs when one independent specialist is jointly engaged and instructed by both parties to assess and provide a report regarding the extent of the claimant/examinee’s injuries.

The parties to a proceeding may agree to a JIME in the interests of minimising the number of assessments that the claimant/examinee is required to attend, therefore lowering overall costs incurred.

Expert Evidence

The specialist gives expert evidence regarding the specific claim. A medico-legal report must precede this.

Expert Evidence can be conducted in person or via secure videolink.
